# Northern Ireland death registration route

nidirect says Northern Ireland deaths should be registered within five days,
except those referred to a coroner, and explains the MCCD and certificate
handoff. The [Coroners Service](../organisations/coroners-service-northern-ireland.md)
investigates reported deaths and can provide the notification that allows
registration where appropriate.

[GRONI](../organisations/general-register-office-northern-ireland.md), the
district registrar and the current coroner route control a real case. This
five-day statement is not imported into Great Britain.
